Lost Season 3 Episode 5 - The Cost of Living
I guess this one was an amazing episode, with a great end. Yes, I really fell like it had an end.
When Libby and Ana Lucia died several questions was still open about them. But, not this time.
The character had a “great finale”.
And, I admit, I cried, it was a very emocional episode.
Well, let’s go to our episode review.

The episode begins with a flashback from Mr. Ekos childhood, he is stealing from the church to get some food for his brother Yemi, but he is caught in the act by a nun. She immediately takes him into the church so Eko can give his confession for sinning, though Eko believes that he was only stealing so he could get some food for his brother, but the woman persists. Eko appears to have trouble with this.
It fades back to Eko, who appears to be in a comatose state, as Sayid, who has apparently gotten back from the two-day trip from the other side of the island, is checking on him. As he and Charlie are leaving, Eko is snapped out of his trance when his brother Yemi appears to him, telling him that it is time for Eko to confess his sins.
Meanwhile, as Sayid and Charlie are walking away, the hut that Eko is in has now seemingly caught on fire, and Sayid races to put it out as Charlie pulls Eko out of the fire. Once the fire is put out, they are surprised to find that Eko is gone.
Meanwhile, Jack is invited by Ben to attend a memorial service being held for Colleen, the woman who Jack could not save. Jack takes this opportunity to talk to Ben about his spinal tumor, as he has figured out that it is him from his x-rays, asking him if he’s had any symptoms, but Ben persists that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
As the procession continues, Ben asks Juliet, who has also attended, why she told Jack about his x-rays. She replies that she did show him the x-rays, but she never told him that they were Ben’s. We later learn that Juliet wants Jack to kill Ben in operation, and that is why she showed him the x-ray.
Back at the camp Locke and Desmond discuss how they will rescue Jack,Kate and Sawyer, when Desmond reminds them that the hatch could not only be used for simply pushing the button, it could also be used for communication, and that they can use it to make contact with the Others.
Sayid points out that the hatch exploded, and Locke suggests that they go to the other station, The Pearl, and see if they can get it to work there. When Sayid brings it up that Eko has disappeared, Locke asks if he said anything before he disappeared, and Charlie brings up that Eko was mumbling something about his brother.
Locke immediately figures it out, that Eko is going back to the plane where his brother was left, right on top of The Pearl, and that they’re all going to the same place.
In the end, Eko is killed by the smoke monster, who has transformed into Yemi’s form. As he’s dying, Eko tells Locke that “he’s next”.
My thoughts:
- Eko is only the second person to be officially killed by the monster. The first one was the pilot.
- Amina tells Eko that he owes his brother Yemi a church. This may be the reason Eko was building the church on the island.
- While not answered, it is assumed that Yemi is a manifestation of the Security System since the wisp of smoke is seen before and after Yemi and other people from Eko’s past appear. This would also explain the sightings of Christian Shephard, Kate’s horse, Walt soaked in water, Dave, and Sawyer’s pig in Outlaws.
- After Eko’s death, the only surviving member of the Tailies is Bernard, excluding those who went missing and are presumed to be captured by the Others or dead.
- A lot will be revealed in the next episode, and then we’ll have to wait until February 7th for a new episode.
- If Desmond can see the future then why didn’t he know the monster was going to attack Mr. Eko before it happened? Why didn’t he try and stop that from happening?
